What are MAX Phases & MXenes? MAX phases and MXenes represent two closely connected families of advanced layered materials. MAX phases are ternary carbides and nitrides (Mₙ₊₁AXₙ) that uniquely combine metallic conductivity and machinability with ceramic‑like thermal stability and oxidation resistance. Through selective etching of the “A” element in MAX phases, two‑dimensional MXenes are produced—novel nanomaterials with exceptionally high electrical conductivity, tunable surface chemistry, and large specific surface area. Together, MAX phases and MXenes form a continuum of materials bridging bulk structural ceramics with next‑generation 2D nanomaterials.
